The Foundation for American Innovation champions the technology, talent, and ideas essential to American prosperity, security, and flourishing. We are builders, hackers, and scholars advancing an optimistic vision of the future—aligning technology with human ends to forge a more perfect union between innovation and the American republic.

To support this mission, FAI is seeking an external relations associate to join the external relations team, which oversees the full range of FAI’s outward-facing projects—from events, to research publication, to media coverage and more.

Reporting to the managing director for external relations and editor-in-chief, this person will assume a wide range of support responsibilities across the team, including but not limited to events planning and staffing, vendor and contractor correspondence, media outreach and tracking, and social media. The role will involve significant collaboration across both the external relations team and FAI as a whole and is an ideal position for someone eager to take on a broad portfolio at a quickly growing organization.

This is a growth position, with strong potential for promotion and the assumption of greater responsibilities commensurate with performance. A successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to absorb the basics of external relations, quickly become an essential member of the team, and contribute to its efficacy and excellence.

This is a full-time position based in Washington, DC.

Responsibilities

  • Assist director of events with preparation for and in-person staffing of events: coordinating with vendors, compiling runs of show, producing printed materials, enforcing guest lists, setting up venues, and attending and working events (sometimes in evenings or on weekends).
  • Assist managing director for external relations and editor-in-chief with publishing and promoting FAI’s research and commentary: tracking publications and media coverage, tracking and building out FAI’s media contacts, and helping with website maintenance.
  • Support creative director with outreach, ordering, and research for event and office material, merchandise, and swag, as well as digital asset production and organization.

Qualifications

  • Highly dependable, with a strong work ethic; when given a task, can be counted on to execute, especially with sensitive matters affecting FAI’s public profile.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining the team’s high standards of quality and consistency across FAI’s distinct brand.
  • Professional demeanor, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal); can be trusted to be the face of FAI to anyone outside the organization.
  • Physical requirements: Ability to frequently navigate multiple flights of stairs throughout the workday in a multi-story facility without elevator access.

Benefits & Perks

  • An annual salary of $50,000–$60,000, based on experience
  • Health, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • 401(k) match up to 6 percent
  • Generous annual performance bonus
  • $1,000 annual book credit
  • Monthly commuter benefit
  • Unlimited vacation policy
  • Flexible work schedule at FAI’s Capitol Hill office, with free snacks and drinks
