Application programming interfaces, or APIs, enable the receipt and transmission of data on the internet. This benign definition obscures the numerous controversies and murky future of one of the digital world's core building blocks.
As the line between the virtual and real worlds continues to blur, technologists, entrepreneurs, and policymakers must grapple with APIs. When the Los Angeles Department of Transportation required ride-sharing services to use its API, Uber sued over the resulting privacy concerns. With Google and Oracle engaged in a legal battle over the contested ownership of APIs, the courts, and ultimately the government itself will be forced to further involve itself in the future of the technology.
